Earlier this year, Kait and I took delivery of our second flatbed truck camper build, the Hawk+ by Four Wheel Campers. In this post I will share a detailed build list of our lightweight pop-up truck camper and the modifications we’ve made so far.
Hawk+ Flatbed Truck Camper by Four Wheel Campers

Let’s start off with the basics of our Four Wheel Campers Hawk+ Flatbed by answering some of the most popular questions we get.
How much does the weigh? Our Hawk+ flatbed was delivered with a dry weight of 2,130 lbs from the factory with the options we selected. For a full list of options and features, check out the build specs section below.
Is there a bathroom in your Four Wheel Camper? Yes, we built our Hawk+ flatbed to have an indoor cassette toilet, indoor shower and an outdoor shower.
Does your Four Wheel Camper have air conditioning? Yes, the 12v Nomadic AC unit is now an option which we selected for our camper.
Which truck do you have? We mounted our Hawk+ flatbed camper on a 2000 Ford F350 Super Duty. Check out our 7.3 Powerstroke article for all the specs and details of the truck.

Power System
Our first Hawk flatbed camper was one of the first Four Wheel Campers built with 300ah of lithium batteries, which was a must have requirement for us at the time.
Once again our Hawk+ flatbed camper not only has lithium batteries but the most they’ve ever put in a camper at 810ah coupled with the RedArc Manager Alpha75 and Rogue system.
The RedArc system controls all of the lights in the camper, including the exterior lights, along with the water pump and refrigerator fan. It will also display fresh and grey water tank levels and can be accessed on our phones using bluetooth. The system also manages all of the power coming in to charge the batteries in the most efficient way possible. It will also trick charge the truck’s batteries when the camper batteries reach 100% state of charge. If the truck batteries die, the RedArc has the ability to charge them from the camper’s lithium batteries.
This system is more than enough to power our 12v AC for a full day (from what we’ve seen in testing so far), my coffee gear, Kait’s multi-cooker, our laptops, smart phones, a two-way fridge and more through a 2000 watt inverter. The 500 watts of solar on the roof help keep the batteries charged along with the ability to charge from the truck’s alternator when driving. There is also an external port where we can plug in our dual portable solar panels.
Check out our post on portable solar panels vs rooftop solar panels.
Order and Install Process
Melanie Garrido was our sales contact at Four Wheel Campers. She managed the changes to our order form and processed all the paperwork. One thing we love about Four Wheel Campers is the camper builder feature on their website. So if you are interested in pricing out one of their pop-up truck campers, just visit fourwheelcampers.com and go to the build and price page.
Since we already had the Norweld tray installed on our truck, it only took the team a few hours to install the Hawk+ flatbed camper. When we got our first Hawk flatbed installed, it took the team 5 days to get the old bed removed and the new one installed along with installing the camper.
Below is a video of us taking our truck to Four Wheel Campers and the install of the camper along with first impressions.
Aftermarket Modifications
So far we’ve only made two modification to our camper. The first is a custom mattress. We ordered ours from Mattress Insider to replace the one that came with our Hawk+ flatbed camper. While the mattress from the factory is comfortable, I have some shoulder problems so I needed something different.
The second modification is a vent cover for the fan. This is one of our essential camping accessories because it allows us the run the vent fan while it’s raining outside without worrying about the rain sensor closing the fan or water getting into the camper.
Check out our list of essential gear for more ideas.
