This is our Dometic / Fan-Tastic Ultra Breeze vent cover review and we hope that you find it useful in helping you decide whether it’s the right fit for your RVing needs.

One consistent element of weather we’ve experienced on the road is rain, and a lot of it. An issue we have with the rain is not being able to open the two Fan-Tastic vents in our motorhome. There is a manual override to turn off the rain sensor and open the vent, but that means letting rain inside. When there is a light drizzle, we may open the vent for air flow, especially while we’re cooking. However, it’s not recommended or ideal during heavy rain.

When we met up with fellow RVers in Flagstaff, Arizona, they introduced us to the Fan-Tastic vent cover on their travel trailer. The cover goes right over the vent and allows it to open even when it’s raining outside.

For two months we contemplated the cover and when it went on sale for $50, Kait finally let me buy one (Happy Dance!). By the way, if you follow our monthly expenses, she’s the reason we’re under budget and she can tell you exactly how much I spent on coffee that month. So if you find this cover for less, please don’t mention it to her! She does know there are other vent covers on the market for less, but we decided to purchase the Fan-Tastic cover because it’s made for the Fan-Tastic vents in our 29′ motorhome.

What We Ordered:

Pros: Fan-Tastic Ultra Breeze Vent Cover

Easy to Install

The instructions were clear and easy to follow. To install the vent I needed a #2 phillips head screw driver, sharp knife to cut off the existing sealant, a tube of Dicor EPDM Self-Leveling Lap Sealant (note: this is the recommended sealant for our rubber roof) and a caulking gun.

From start to finish, it took about 30 minutes. We also filmed the process which made the install longer than it needed to be. If we buy a second vent cover, it should take me about 10-15 minutes.

Can Keep the Vent Open During Rain

We experienced two days of thunderstorms after installing the vent cover and it was great to be able to leave the kitchen vent open without worrying about rain getting in. When there was a heavy downpour and water splashed onto the rain sensor, the vent still closed. We do have the option to turn off the rain sensor if we want to.

The sound of the rain hitting the vent cover was noticeably less than the sounds of the rain hitting our other vent with out the additional cover. This was a nice bonus we didn’t expect.

UV Protection

We purchased the black cover which keeps direct sunlight from getting into the coach when the vent is open. Below is a comparison of the vent with the cover in the kitchen and the vent without the cover in the bathroom.

Height of RV Did Not Increase

The vent cover is about the same height as the Dometic AC unit on our roof and did not make the RV any taller.

Can Drive With the Vent Open

Now we have the option to drive with the vent open for air circulation. On a hot day, it’s nice to be able to leave the vent cover open to let the hot air out.

3 Year Limited Warranty

The Fan-Tastic Ultra Breeze vent cover came with a three year limited warranty on parts and labor. Hopefully we never have to put this to the test.

Cons: Fan-Tastic Ultra Breeze Vent Cover

Vent Doesn’t Open All the Way

The Ultra Breeze cover isn’t tall enough to allow the vent to open all the way. We compared it to the one in the bathroom which doesn’t have the cover and it’s a noticeable difference. It hasn’t affected the air flow from what we can tell and the motor on the vent appears to be working fine.

Kait tried to call Fan-Tastic’s customer service to ask about this but she wasn’t able to get through due to high call volume. If we do get a hold of the manufacture we will update this section.

Overall:

The Domestic / Fan-Tastic Ultra Breeze Vent Cover has been a great addition so far. We’ve been cooking in the rain with the vent open and the fan on without any problems. The noise of the rain is minimized inside the coach and we don’t have direct sunlight coming through the vent. The cover has come in very handy in all the Florida rain and we may pick up a second one for our other vent.

  2. Hi, Great review. Thank you for the information. I was curious if you thought too much light was blocked and the cover made your rv too dark? Did it make your space feel smaller?

    Thanks

    • Hi Art – while the light coming through the vent was cut down quite a bit, it’s not something that we really noticed since we tended to keep the blinds open during the day anyway.

  3. The cover is available in three colors (white, black, and smoke). Why did you choose the black over the other two choices?
